Prof. Aurobinda Routray
B. Sc. Engineering , Electrical Engineering, 1989
Professor & Dean (Infrastructure - Electrical, Electronics & Computing) IIT KHARAGPUR
Prof. Aurobinda Routray completed his B.Sc. Engineering in Electrical Engineering from NIT Rourkela (formerly REC) in 1989, followed by an M.Tech from IIT Kanpur in 1991. He began his academic career at NIT Rourkela as a Research Engineer and later as a Lecturer in 1992. He earned his Ph.D. from Sambalpur University in 1999 and pursued postdoctoral research in Mathematical Signal Processing at Purdue University, USA, in 2004. That same year, he joined IIT Kharagpur, where he rose to the rank of Professor in 2011. With over 36 years of distinguished service, Prof. Routray has excelled as an educator, researcher, innovator, and entrepreneur. His research spans signal processing, embedded systems, machine diagnostics, and applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning. He has mentored more than 50 Ph.D. scholars and translated over 100 innovative ideas into real-world products and solutions. Prof. Routray has authored over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, 200+ conference papers, and contributed to five books. His work has garnered more than 10,000 citations and includes seven granted patents. He has led major national-level projects in collaboration with organizations such as GAIL, ONGC, DRDO, and Samsung. Many of the models developed under his leadership have evolved into functional product prototypes, showcasing the translational impact of his research. A serial entrepreneur, he has founded five start-up ventures to bridge the gap between lab-scale innovation and practical application. Notably, one of these ventures is dedicated to reviving organic, cow-based farming in rural India—an initiative that harmonizes scientific insight with cultural and ecological values. He has several awards and accolades to his credit, the notable ones being Young Scientist Award by Orissa Bigyan Academy in 2001; BOYSCAST Fellow Award by Department of Science and Technology in 2003; Samsung Global Research Outreach (GRO) Award, 2012; 1st Position in BioEye Competition 2015;and IEEE 2015 5 Best Teacher in Electrical Technology IIT Kharagpur 2015.
