Dr. Birendra Jena

Scientist at Regional Research Laboratory (Currently IMMT)
Dr. Birendra Jena completed his B.Sc. in Metallurgical and Materials Engineering from NIT Rourkela (formerly REC) in 1973 and earned his M. E. in Metallurgy from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore in 1975. He worked as a Scientist at Regional Research Laboratory (Currently IMMT) Bhubaneswar, India from 1975 to 1985. He obtained his Ph.D. in Metallurgical Engineering from École Polytechnique, Montreal, Canada in 1988, and Post-doctoral degree from McGill University, Montreal, Canada in 1990. He has worked in multiple universities and research organizations in Canada and USA in different capacities. Dr. Jena has over forty years of research and product development experience in several areas of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering that include production of metals and alloys, material characterization and failure analysis. He has about forty research publications and two patents to his credit. His humble efforts to create a network of NIT Rourkela alumni living in North America culminated in the formation of NIT Rourkela Overseas Alumni Association (NITROAA) in 2014. He became the founding Vice President (2014-16) and later the second President of the organization (2016-18). In last ten years, NITROAA has emerged as a vibrant alumni organization of the Institute. Dr Jena was involved in establishment of several scholarships by NITROAA for the students from economically challenged families, and helped in establishment of Prof. Ajay Mohanty Memorial Endowment Chair Professor in the Electrical Engineering Department. Currently he is engaged in the establishment of an Endowment Chair in the name of Late Prof. Asok Mohanty’s name in the Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Department and a Technology Research Center (STC) at NIT Rourkela. Dr. Jena has been a member of several professional organizations such as ASM international, The Minerals, Metallurgical and Materials Society (TMS) and National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE).
